Things to do
During your stay at Rivertime Lodge you may relax and enjoy the surroundings or explore the rugged natural environment of the Whanganui River Valley.

  • Private walkways
  • Atene Skyline Track
  • Canoeing
  • Jetboat Tours
  • Mountain to Sea Cycle Trail

There are several marked walking tracks on our 1000 hectare property. The 1 - 2 hr Ridge Walk rewards you with spectacular views of surrounding hill country “ Puketapu”

And on a clear day you can see the Tasman sea.

The Outback Walk follows along side the Pitangi stream with its unique boulder formations and through large areas of native bush and manuka. Part of this trail was used by early settlers to take produce and pick up supplies from the steamers on the Whanganui river. It takes 4 ½ hrs to complete this walk or 2 hrs return to the Pitangi stream crossing.

We recommend sturdy footwear and easy to medium levels of fitness. These tracks may be closed during lambing between September to November.

If you prefer more of a challenge the Atene Skyline Track Is 4 ks North in the Whanganui National Park.It takes 6 to 8 hours to complete this circuit. The highest point is Taumata Trig (523m). Many hundreds of years ago ,the hil Puketapu , stood at the end of a long narrow -necked peninsula. The river once flowed in a complete circle around Puketapu. With years of erosion the river broke through the neck ,forcing a more direct route to the sea and cutting off the meander.

A shorter (approx 2 hr) walk up to a signposted lookout offers views of the meander of the old Whanganui river bed. Return is back down to the starting point.
